I was trying to shoot the lunar eclipse, but could hardly make a decent shot - I did not have any useable foreground element to make use of. As I was already there, alone in the darkness during the totality of the eclipse, I decided to give other techniques a go as well.

First I tried to do some 'star trail' shots, but 6-8 minutes in a single exposure are too short to make good looking trails but too long to yield a usable picture. Instead I went on with the 'still stars' method instead. 20 seconds proved to be short enough to prevent star movement.

The foreground is illuminated with a small flashlight and a car driving by. The totality has already ended in this shot, therefore the brightness of the moon.
